June Hack Day Highlight: PebbleDuty

PagerDuty’s June Hack Day was just the other day, and once again our staff presented some very cool projects. This month we highlight the winner of the Most Awesome award.

Most Awesome: PebbleDuty

PagerDuty reliably triggers incidents from a vast array of monitoring tools, your email, and your custom tools through our API. Now, thanks to Daniel Ribeiro and Mark Matta, you can trigger an alert from a new channel: your watch. If you have a Pebble watch, you can trigger incidents from your watch to PagerDuty. We call it PebbleDuty.

Pebble is a watch that uses Bluetooth to connect to iPhone and Android smartphones, alerting you to incoming calls, emails, and messages. An open SDK makes Pebble highly customizable.

With just a press of the watch button, Pebble makes an HTTP request to PagerDuty to create a triggered incident. This way, if everything hits the fan and you’re away from your phone or laptop, you can trigger your whole team just by raising your arm—and PebbleDuty does the rest.

Plans for future iterations include sending incidents to PebbleDuty and allowing you to acknowledge, resolve, or escalate them by pressing one of the watch buttons. We’ve also shared the code on GitHub PebbleDuty—take a look, fork it, and show us what you can do!

It’s easy to see why this project received the Most Awesome award. Thanks to guys like Daniel and Mark, PagerDuty makes it hard for your team to be out of the loop when they’re needed most.
